What is World of Tanks?
World of Tanks is a free-to-play team-based tank combat MMO developed by Wargaming, originally launched in 2010. You command a single tank in 15v15 PvP battles across varied maps — cities, open fields, mountain passes, desert landscapes. The roster includes 600+ vehicles from 11 nations (USA, Germany, USSR, UK, France, China, Japan, Czech, Poland, Sweden, Italy) spanning tiers I through X, from interwar-era light tanks to Cold War-era prototypes.
The depth is in the armor model. Every tank has individually modeled armor plates with specific thickness values — frontal glacis, turret face, side skirts, rear panels. Shells can penetrate, ricochet, or absorb depending on angle of impact, shell type (AP, APCR, HE, HEAT), and armor thickness at the hit point. Learning where to shoot each tank — and where not to get shot — is the primary skill curve.
Five vehicle classes serve distinct roles: light tanks scout and spot, medium tanks flex and flank, heavy tanks anchor positions, tank destroyers snipe from cover, and artillery provides indirect fire support. Team composition and map control determine outcomes more than individual skill.
The first 20-30 battles use a protected matchmaking pool at tiers I-III. By tier V-VI, you'll encounter the full strategic complexity — hull-down positions, crossfire angles, flanking routes, and vision/concealment mechanics. Premium account boosts credit and XP earning; premium tanks offer unique playstyles and better economy but don't outstat tech tree equivalents.

World of Tanks FAQ
Yes — World of Tanks is free to download and play on PC. All tech tree vehicles (600+) are researchable through gameplay. Premium tanks and premium account are purchasable but don't provide combat advantages unavailable to free players — they improve economy efficiency.
Partially. Minimum specs ask for an Intel Core i5, 4 GB RAM, and a GeForce GTX 460. For comfortable play at medium-high settings, a GTX 1050 or better is recommended. After 200+ hours on a GTX 1050 Ti, the game ran at steady 60 FPS on high settings at 1080p. The game was graphically overhauled in recent years — old PCs may struggle.
Debated. Premium ammunition (purchasable with in-game credits) has higher penetration, and premium tanks earn better credits. Fairness rating: 5/10. However, map knowledge, positioning, and armor angling skill outweigh spending in most battles. The best players in the world run free tech tree tanks competitively.
Around 60 GB on PC. The HD graphics overhaul significantly increased file size from earlier versions. Updates add new tanks and maps regularly. Keep 70 GB free for long-term play.
USSR is the safest starter pick — forgiving armor profiles and strong all-around tanks at every tier. The IS-7 heavy tank line is the most recommended first grind. US medium tanks (Patton line) are a strong second choice for versatility. Pick one line and research to tier X before branching — spreading across multiple nations slows progression dramatically.
