What is Ikariam?

Ikariam is a free-to-play browser-based strategy MMO developed by Gameforge, set in a Mediterranean world inspired by classical Greece. You start with a small town on an island shared with up to 16 other players and expand it into an empire across multiple islands. Core gameplay revolves around five resources — wood, marble, wine, crystal glass, and sulfur — used for construction, research, and military production.

What makes Ikariam stand apart from generic browser builders is forced resource interdependence. Each island produces only one luxury resource. You cannot grow self-sufficiently — you must trade with neighbors or seize their production by force. This creates naturally occurring diplomacy, alliances, and economic warfare without the game needing to script it.

Military content is fully developed. Land units range from swordsmen to hoplites to catapults, and a naval fleet supports blockades and sea combat. Towns cannot be permanently captured — only pillaged, occupied, or blockaded — which keeps the game from becoming winner-takes-all. Research across four trees (Economy, Science, Military, Seafaring) unlocks advanced buildings, units, and production bonuses.

The pacing is real-time and deliberate. Building and research timers range from minutes to hours. Ikariam is designed for check-in play — queue construction, send trade ships, launch attacks, then return later. The Gods of Olympus update added shrine building and divine bonuses tied to six Greek gods, deepening the late-game economy.
