What is Genshin Impact?

Genshin Impact is a free-to-play open-world action RPG developed by HoYoverse where you explore the continent of Teyvat, switching between a party of 4 characters in real-time combat. The core mechanic is elemental reactions — combining Pyro, Hydro, Electro, Cryo, Anemo, Geo, and Dendro attacks to trigger damage multipliers, crowd control, and area effects. Building teams around reaction chains is where the strategic depth lives.

The open world is genuinely massive. Seven major nations — Mondstadt, Liyue, Inazuma, Sumeru, Fontaine, Natlan, and Snezhnaya — each with distinct biomes, puzzles, dungeons, and questlines. You can climb any surface, glide from any height, and swim across rivers. Exploration rewards are everywhere: treasure chests, hidden quests, and collectible items that feed back into character progression.

You play as the Traveler, a dimension-hopping protagonist searching for their lost sibling. Along the way you meet and recruit characters from each nation — each with a unique weapon type, elemental skill, and burst ability. Characters are obtained through a gacha system (Wishes) or given free through story progression and events.

The opening 10-15 hours are story-driven and generous. You'll unlock the first two nations, receive several free characters (including the strong support Xiangling from Spiral Abyss Floor 3), and accumulate enough Primogems for 40-60 free Wishes. The game doesn't pressure spending until late-game Spiral Abyss, which is optional.
