What is Arknights?

Arknights is a free-to-play tactical tower defense RPG developed by Hypergryph and published by Yostar, set in the dystopian world of Terra where a mineral called Originium grants power but also spreads a deadly plague. You play as the amnesiac Doctor, commanding operators from Rhodes Island — a pharmaceutical and defense organization. Core gameplay is tower defense: place operators on a grid map to stop waves of enemies from reaching exit points.

What makes it the most successful tower defense game ever ($678M+ revenue) is the tactical depth. Eight operator classes — Vanguard, Guard, Defender, Sniper, Caster, Medic, Supporter, Specialist — each play distinct roles. Operator facing direction matters. Deployment order matters. Skill activation timing matters. At high difficulty, stages play more like puzzles than traditional TD.

Operators are acquired through a gacha system, but Arknights is famously generous compared to peers. Most stages are clearable with free, lower-rarity operators. The Recruitment system gives chances at high-rarity operators without spending. Auto-deploy replays your winning strategy for farming, eliminating repetitive re-plays.

The story is unusually ambitious for a mobile game. Multi-chapter narrative arcs explore political conflict, class warfare, and the ethics of medical triage — delivered through extended dialogue scenes and cinematic cutscenes. Three seasons of an anime adaptation have aired. The spin-off Arknights: Endfield (released January 2026) expands the universe into 3D action RPG territory.
