Resources come first
Wood is the backbone of everything you build, so upgrade your Sawmill early and often. Each island also produces one luxury resource — develop it, because you'll trade it for the others you're missing. A steady resource economy funds your whole empire; don't neglect it chasing military too early.

Research and expansion
Build an Academy and assign citizens as scientists to generate research points — the tech tree unlocks economic, military, and seafaring upgrades over time. Once your first town is stable, found a second city on an island with a different luxury resource. Spreading across resource types makes you self-sufficient and is the key to long-term growth.
Trade and diplomacy
Ikariam rewards cooperation. Build a Trading Port and use your surplus luxury resource to trade for what you lack, and join an alliance early — alliances offer protection, trade partners, and shared knowledge that make the game far smoother than going it alone. Diplomacy is often more valuable than a big army in the early game.
