Genshin Impact Tier List (2026): Best Characters Ranked
Our 2026 Genshin Impact tier list, ranked around free-to-play viability — who's actually worth your Primogems, plus free team templates and a beginner FAQ.

Genshin Impact lives and dies by its roster. With well over eighty characters and a fresh banner arriving every couple of weeks, the single most important skill a player can develop isn't dodging or dungeon-running — it's knowing who is genuinely worth your hard-earned Primogems. A great five-star can carry you through years of content; a mistimed pull can leave you resource-starved for a month. This is our current 2026 tier list, built around free-to-play viability rather than raw whale-account ceilings. If you can only invest in a handful of characters, these are the ones that pay you back.
Before the list, one framing rule worth internalizing: in Genshin, teams win, not individual characters. A perfectly built solo unit still loses to a well-synergized four-character rotation. So read the tiers below as "how much this character elevates a team," not "how big their damage number is in a vacuum."
S-Tier — pull without hesitation
These characters define entire team archetypes and hold their value through every patch and power-creep cycle.
• Furina — the closest thing the game has to a universal support. Her hybrid healing-and-damage-amplification kit slots into almost any composition. If you pull one limited character this year, make it her. • Neuvillette — an on-field Hydro DPS who trivializes content with charged attacks. Beginner-friendly, forgiving to build, and brutally effective. • Nahida — the Dendro backbone that makes reaction teams tick. If you run Bloom, Hyperbloom, or Spread, she is effectively non-negotiable. • Kazuha — the universal crowd-control and elemental-damage amplifier. He groups enemies, buffs your damage, and fits nearly every team.
A-Tier — excellent, flexible picks
Not quite build-arounds, but any of these anchors a genuinely competitive team — and several are free or near-free.
• Bennett — still, years later, the best support in the game, available to virtually everyone. Healing plus a massive attack buff in one kit. • Xiangling — a free off-field Pyro powerhouse handed to you from Spiral Abyss Floor 3. The famous "National Team" is built around her. • Raiden Shogun — an Electro battery and sub-DPS who enables entire team structures. • Yelan — a premium off-field Hydro DPS that pairs beautifully with on-field carries.
B-Tier — situational but strong
Excellent in the right comp, unremarkable outside it. Xingqiu (a superb Hydro enabler and one of the best free units in the game), Fischl (reliable off-field Electro), and Sucrose (a budget Kazuha for grouping and buffing) all belong here. These are the characters that make free accounts competitive.
C-Tier — early-game fillers
Perfectly fine when you start, but you'll replace them: the standard Traveler (though the Dendro Traveler is genuinely useful), Amber, and Kaeya. Don't invest heavy resources into them long-term.
The real takeaway for new players
Here's the part most tier lists bury: you do not need S-tier characters to clear Genshin Impact. A completely free National Team — Bennett, Xiangling, Xingqiu, and a flex slot — clears the overwhelming majority of endgame content, including most of the Spiral Abyss. The tier list is a guide for where to spend, not a barrier to entry. Pull for characters that fit a plan you actually want to play, not for whoever happens to be trending this week.
Free-to-play team templates that actually work
• National Team (Pyro core): Main DPS + Bennett + Xiangling + Xingqiu. Cheap, free-heavy, and clears most of the Spiral Abyss. • Hyperbloom (Dendro/Electro): Nahida + a Hydro unit + an Electro trigger (Fischl or a free Electro) + a flex. Reaction damage does the heavy lifting, so even four-stars hit hard. • Freeze (Cryo/Hydro): A Cryo carry + a Hydro applicator + Kazuha + a healer. It locks enemies in place and controls fights — a big survivability boost for newer players.
Notice how many of these slots are free or low-rarity characters. Account strength in Genshin comes from synergy, not from spending.
Do weapons and artifacts matter more than characters?
Yes and no. A five-star on bad gear will underperform a four-star on good gear — which is why veterans say "the account is the artifacts." For beginners, get your core team to a usable level first, then farm artifacts once you know which team you're committing to. Don't burn Resin on endgame artifact domains before you have a team worth gearing.
